Understanding the Research Process – A Guide for PPI Panel Members

The aim of this one day workshop is to provide patients and members of the public who would like to be involved in the design and conducting of research, an understanding of the key elements of the research process to a level in which they can work confidently with the research team and make a significant contribution to the research in an active partnership whether this be in a consultative, collaborative or public-led research role.

 The training workshop includes:

  • An overview of the research process
  • Jargon busting
  • Making sure you ask the right research question
  • An introduction to different data collection methodologies
  • How to review  a research proposal and patient information
  • Interpreting and understanding data
  • How to effectively communicate research findings to the public

  • Sit on steering groups with confidence
  • Advise on the acceptability of study design

Training for Peer Interviewers

Our face-to-face one-day training workshop for peer interviewers has been designed to prepare people to carry out high-quality interviews that are respectful of interviewees and generate useful and relevant information for the project by:

  • Helping people to develop the skills necessary for the task
  • Building people’s confidence
  • Building on the skills and experiences interviewers bring to the project

Our training for peer interviewers includes:

  • What makes a good interviewer
  • Key interviewing techniques: using open-ended questions, active listening and probing for more information
  • How to design and use the interview schedule
  • How to manage the interview process from start to finish including, how to begin, putting the interviewee at ease, conducting the interview and how to close down the interview
  • How not bias the interview with your own experiences
  • Gaining consent and checking the interviewee’s capacity to participate on the day
  • The importance of noting and reacting to non-verbal communication
  • How to deal with sensitive or difficult topics and situations
  • What to do if for example the interviewee seems unwell or appears to be at risk.
  • Setting up the interview - practical issues, including digital audio recording.
